London Prelude 07/31/23

Do you have questions about England that need answered?  Did the London Bridge really fall down?  Were the Crown Jewels sold?  Do the Brits really like French fries?  Are the White Cliffs of Dover really white? Does Big Ben tell time?  Follow this journal and find the answers to these questions and more.

Travel to the United Kingdom with Linda and Jerry and Amanda and Harry.  I have just completed a year long program at the University of South Alabama with a concentration on history and research.  This trip is my graduation gift.  

If you wanted to go to England, but just never found the time, take a trip vicariously through this on-line journal.  Learn the ins and outs of public transportation in the greater London area.  Visit the Tower of London, walk across the London Bridge, see where the Royals live, eat in a pub.  All this and much more.

We will stay in London one week and then take a train to Canterbury.  Canterbury saw it's beginnings as a Roman settlement in the first century.  Learn the connection between the Mayflower and Canterbury.

I was asked one time, what do you need to travel to Europe?  My answer was three things.  You need a passport, a credit card, and a sense of adventure.

 Last night we discussed our itinerary for today. In most cases you need a plan going forward.  We were going to get started shortly after coffee.  Everyone came downstairs and Amanda and Linda made coffee and we had pastries for breakfast.  We decided to have a light breakfast so we could get started on our plans for today.  One thing led to another, just one more cup of coffee, and before we realized it, it was mid-morning.  We finally got going about 10:30. We use the Arsenal gateway to enter the London Underground subway.  It is about one block from our apartment.  We walked around to the station and found it was closed for the morning.  We then walked to the next station, located in Finsbury.  We were already late getting started.  We arrived in London proper and came out of the tube by Buckingham Palace, just as the changing of the guard was completed.    We then walked along St James Park to White Hall Street. ...

Discovering Canterbury 08/17/2023

 We had a busy day in Canterbury today.  We decided to go to Hever Castle tomorrow to visit Ann Boleyn's home and Chartwell, Winston Churchill's home.  Harry and I checked the train station for tickets to Hever.  When we inquired about the tickets, the ticket agent said, "Why do you want to go to Hever, it is in the middle of nowhere".  It turns out we would have to go back to London, then change trains for Hever.  A three hour trip, one way.  It was only 65 miles from Canterbury.  We decided to rent a car.  Tomorrow's adventure, Today we took a walking tour of Canterbury for about two hours, then we paused for lunch at a local Italian restaurant, "ASK Italian".  Another great restaurant on the Stour River, also on the outdoor patio.  I have not mentioned the weather over here, because I know how hot it is at home.  The weather has been delightful, highs in the low to mid seventies,lows at night mid fifties, with no rain. Eve of Departure 08/08/2023

The planning is over, we just checked in with Delta.  This time tomorrow we will tracing the flight of Charles Lindberg. We will get off his flight path and land in London instead of Paris. Did I mention that Lindberg was an Army Aviator when he flew across the Atlantic?  He was.  Lindberg was promoted to Colonel in 1927.  His flight from New York to Paris took  over 33 hours.  Our flight from Atlanta will take about 8 hours.  I think he would have been a good helicopter pilot, but his destiny was fixed wing aircraft. Follow the adventures of the Hatfields and Kearleys as they return to the Mother Country.
