London Arrival 08-10-2023

We had an uneventful trip to London.  We flew from Montgomery to Atlanta and after a one hour layover departed for London.  Our flight on Delta was about 7 hours and 45 minutes.  The aircraft we flew in cruised at a speed of 0.82 Mach.  I thought about when John Clark and I were flying a Southern Company Lear 45 from California to Alabama at 0.90 Mach and passed the Delta aircraft flying below us flying across the United States.

After clearing customs, I went to the information kiosk  asked the clerk for further directions for our transportation into the greater London area.  He spoke English and I spoke English.  He had to explain his instructions to  me 4 times before I understood him.  After clearing the communication hurdle, we boarded the Piccadilly line and after 24 stops, arrived at our destination, Arsenal station.

We arrived in Heathrow about 7:00 AM and got to our apartment in Islington at 9:30 AM.  We were met by the owner of the apartment, Charlie Best.  Charlie graciously allowed us to check in early. (the normal check in time is 4:00 PM).  After getting settled we walked to a nearby restaurant, the Beam, and had a late breakfast.  I ordered the Mediterranean breakfast.  It was unlike any breakfast I had eaten before.  I asked the waitress to tell me the names of each of the items on my plate.  Travel is all about new adventures.

The apartment we are staying in was constructed in 1959.  The original structures located here were destroyed during the Germany Blitz during WW II in 1940.  It was almost 20 years in recovery.

After taking a recovery "nap", we walked to a local pub, the Plimsoll.  Their specialty was the cheeseburger. We had an enjoyable dinner and then retired to our apartment.

Tomorrow we will start our day with a visit to the War Cabinet Rooms and go from there.
