The British National Museum 08/15/2023

Today we visited the British National Museum  This museum was created by an Act of Parliament in 1753. This museum covers the story of human culture from its beginnings to the present.  This museum is the number one tourist attraction in Great Britian.  Admission is free and it had over 4,000,000 visitors last year.  Today was our last full day in London, tomorrow we will travel to Canterbury.  I think all the tourists in London chose today as the day they wanted to tour the museum.  We wanted to be there when it opened at 10:00.  There was a waiting line of visitors, at least 4 abreast, that stretched to the end of the street and all the way down the next block.  We decided to get a cup of coffee while waiting for the line to diminish.  Thirty minutes later, I think the line was longer than before.  We then got into the line and 45 minutes later gained admission.

A fascinating display of historical artifacts.  There are over 8,000,000 artifacts on display.  On prominent display was the Rosetta Stone. We enjoyed our visit, but you must understand it would take weeks or months to tour this musem in its entirety due to the immense size of the building. The viewing area is 807,000 square feet and has 94 galleries.

When we departed the museum we took a bus to Camden Park.  Our plan was to take a boat ride up the Regents Canal to Little Venice, but that boat departed about the time we got there, so we walked along the canal to Little Venice.  Our walk along the canal was very pleasant and the neighborhood was very nice.  There are a number of pubs along the canal, and we chose the Bridge House.  The staff was very friendly and could not have been more accomodating.  I had been searching fo a Scotch Egg since we got to England and found it here.  Very good.  Our meal was delicious and the Sticky Toffee Pudding was delightful.

We have enjoyed our visit to London and tomorrow we will continue our adventure as we board a train for Canterbury.  Travel with us as we continue our journey.
